Exciting News about a New Book Contract

Monday, June 2, 2014

I have just signed a contract for a novel with Head of Zeus. This is a new departure - still set in Anglo-Saxon England, but a couple of generations earlier than The Bone Thief. So we will have to wait a little to find out what happens next to Wulfgar, but I hope to be back in his world before too long.

Nearly ready for The Traitors' Pit Book Launch

Monday, December 31, 2012

The Traitors' Pit will be launched on February 20th, at the same venue as The Bone Thief last year: the lovely Mansion House in York. Again, I'm grateful to the Jorvik Viking Festival for giving me a platform.

Back from a busy fortnight!

Monday, October 1, 2012

First there was the fantastic Bloody Scotland, then my lecture in York, then the brilliant HNS London 12, interspersed with going on an Arvon writing course and seeing lots of family and friends. It's great to be back in Orkney for the peace and quiet (ahem!) of lecturing, and getting on with The Traitors' Pit...and I can't wait for the next Bloody Scotland!

Bloody Scotland

Saturday, September 29, 2012

Off by the overnight boat to Aberdeen tomorrow, before we drive south to Stirling on Saturday for Bloody Scotland! There are still a few tickets available for the session I'm sharing with Clio Gray and Alanna Knight. The weather forecast is dreadful, but at least it's a westerly rather than an easterly gale.

Publication of Volume X of the Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture: The Western Midlands, ed. R. Bryant

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

I was very excited to get the next instalment of the Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture in the post a couple of days ago. This is the equivalent of the Bible where this field is concerned, and in many ways this one is the best yet. The pieces of carved stone are photographed from many different angles, and I think this is the first Corpus volume really to present the sculpture holistically.

Publication Day of The Bone Thief in paperback.

Out today, in a lovely format with foil on the cover.

I'm giving a talk on Viking-Age Sculpture at Valhalla, in association with the Jorvik Viking Centre

Monday, September 24, 2012

I'm delighted to be invited back to York to give a talk on my current area of research, the viking-age sculpture of northern England. These stones are an amazing resource, full of fascinating images and many surprises.

YORK GIG: I'll be speaking at the Jorvik Viking Centre on September 24th

Sunday, August 5, 2012

On Monday 24th September, at 7.00 pm, I'll be giving a talk at Jorvik with my academic hat on, on the sculpture of Anglian and Viking York. There is a wonderful display of sculpture as part of their current exhibition, Valhalla: In Search of the Viking Dead, and I was very pleased to be asked to write the material for the display boards.

Paperback of The Bone Thief

Friday, July 27, 2012

The paperback - with map and the first chapter of The Traitors' Pit - will be out in just over two weeks. I haven't seen it yet, but the lovely folk at Ebury tell me it's come back from the printers.

Map for The Bone Thief!

Thursday, March 1, 2012

The main complaint about The Bone Thief that I've fielded so far has been that, 'It needs a map!'
Quite right: it does need a map.
It was meant to have a map.
